WYANT WOODS EMPLOYEES, RESIDENTS DONATE CLOTHING AND PREPARE FOOD FOR THE HOMELESS IN AKRON

(Akron, OH, April 10, 2014) ― Unfortunately, most people forget about the homeless in the community during the colder months, leaving them to battle the harsh winter weather without sufficient clothing. Over the past eight months, nearly 200 employees and residents at Wyant Woods Care Center in Akron have raised money to purchase winter hats, gloves and scarves for the homeless people in Akron; they also prepared and served meals to the homeless prior to distributing these essential winter garments.

Eric Hutchins, Executive Director at Wyant Woods, says that the facility raised money through fundraisers, like selling candy bars in-house and a holding a meatball-making contest. As a team, Wyant Woods employees and residents were able to purchase approximately 100 hats and gloves and about 50 scarves to distribute to the homeless people of Akron through two key community outreach organizations, the Peter Maurin Center and ACCESS.

“At the Peter Maurin Center, we packed lunches and made sandwiches for approximately 65 individuals,” Hutchins said. “Then we visited people under the Y Bridge in Akron, a place where homeless typically congregate, and handed out meals along with new hats, scarves and gloves.”

At ACCESS, a women’s shelter in Akron, the employees helped serve lunch, then allowed the women and children of the shelter to select hats, gloves and scarves of their choice. Employees also served meals to the homeless people at Haven of Rest, a social service organization providing emergency and residential care to the disadvantaged people of the community-at-large.
