CommuniCare Family of Companies Celebrates Heart Month, Feb. 14
More than 50 facilities join together to raise awareness for Heart Health.

CINCINNATI, OH (February 14, 2017) – CommuniCare, one of the nation’s largest privately owned skilled nursing companies, will host educational programs, forums and awareness efforts in honor of Hearth Month, culminating across all CommuniCare centers with events and activities, on February 14. Heart Month was established in 1964 to remind Americans to focus on their hearts and encourage them to get their families, friends and communities involved.

CommuniCare Centers will host community blood pressure screenings, health fairs providing education on heart disease, public education courses on how to eat, cook and shop heart healthy, and quick exercise tips for both the home and office.

According to the American Heart Association, millions of Americans live with heart disease, stroke or cardiovascular condition. The first American Heart Month, which took place in February 1964, was proclaimed by President Lyndon B. Johnson.

CommuniCare offers post-acute care to help patients recover from heart attacks, heart surgery and procedures such as stenting and angioplasty. The cardiac program provides education and counseling services to help heart patients increase physical fitness, reduce cardiac symptoms, improve health and reduce the risk of future heart problems, including heart attack.

CommuniCare’s Cardiac 360 Program also serves an important role in the Heart Health initiative. Cardiac 360 is a preventative program that uses a specialized device capable of precisely measuring cardiac output in patients, up to 14 days prior to the first symptom of heart failure.

“Return to hospital rate has improved, along with quality care because this is a very high-touch patient model,” said Kim Jarrell, Director of Cardiac 360, Complex Care Partners. “Very similar to a Swan-Ganz catheterization, this alternative noninvasive, innovative procedure takes three minutes. It’s a comprehensive test that provides parameters so that we can see what’s going on with the patient. That’s the beauty of it.”

In addition to Heart Month, CommuniCare provides year-round education and awareness in the prevention and detection of heart disease.

“We have programs for our employees and patients alike on the importance of reading nutrition labels, maintaining a healthy diet, finding a support system, empowering patients to get better so that they can return home and stay home,” said Cassidy Komes, Corporate Director of Network Development, CommuniCare Family of Companies. “We implement a multi-disciplinary approach amongst our dietitians, physicians, nurses and social workers. They are all playing a role – at work and at home – in making our patients’ outcomes successful.”
